or the sculpture of the verb and images
Most sacred books begin by magnifying the word, the Word. In the Bibles, the "Word is God".
The Word incarnates. He is made flesh. He saves the dead by death.
Religions and philosophies make the verb the vehicle of knowledge. Knowledge is born with, it is making love. To live with. To be with. And yet, end up dying alone. Solitude and sociability, such are the ontological poles of human destinies.
At the end of XX centuries, our "world" civilization is built on a mirage of collective images and a shock of individual realities. Electrical piping weaves a communication network where bits and pixels jostle. The play of words and the flash of photos make us forget the cacophony of speeches and the absence of love. In this hustle and bustle of communications, formulas cling to the front page of newspapers, books, and magazines, and murderous little phrases hold the place of aphorisms of thought. In the immensity of the universe, the river of the humans of the blue planet is lost in the bloodbath, the sands of the famine, the catastrophes of the progress, the emptiness of the wealth, the gulfs of the jouissance, the mountains contradictions and spiritual deserts.
These are some of the ideas that jostled in my mind when I discovered "the guerra dell 'odio, work of Jean Jerome Montagnini, says John Lo Scorpione.
When she discovered it, unpacked and standing, I was seized by the memory of a man who symbolizes for me this XX century. He had accompanied me in the Carpathians to discover the Dacian fortresses, in the autumn of 1968. He spoke several languages and served as interpreter. In the promiscuity of the mountain huts where the suitka flowed, we shared our experiences of lives. A brilliant student of mathematics and philosophy, he had been mobilized as an aviator during the Second World War in the Axis camp.
In 1942 he bombed Leningrad and was shot down. Prisoners of the Russians, he had known the death camps that typhus was suffering from. By the revolt, he had survived for the Siberian forced labor camps.
After ten years of detention in the Soviet Union, he had been sent back to his country, Romania. There, received as a slave after the change of regime, he had suffered the communist jails of the "Danube of thought"
For ten years, he spent his days reciting the Illiad and the Odyssey in the Greek text so as not to sink into madness. When I met him, after 25 years of prison life, he had finally found the freedom that had stolen from his country's history, while living as an outcast. It was another 25th hour.
Since then, I have never met such a humane human. However, when I left him, he confided to me, in the serenity of a smile:
I am a man with a history.
John Lo Scorpione's "guerra dell'odio" reminds me of this "man with a hole", met 25 years ago. Thus, artistic creation is a work of vibrations, emotions and correspondences. It does not matter the time and the space. It does not matter the images and the words, the speeches and the forms, the currents and the schools. By sculpting in the concrete formulas and images of the imagination of this twentieth century. John Lo Scorpione makes me feel this communion that beings can experience while kneading images and words.
In doing so, I live, I share, I exist. And, despite the war of hatred, I continue to hope for the humanity we carry within us.
